The research at the country level suggests some powerful findings about accommodation types, services and facilities which have the most positive impact on students.

The findings from Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands are of particular interest as these countries report the most positive impact of living environment on well-being.

The countries where mental health was reported as the best are Germany, Austria and Italy. The countries where respondents felt the greatest impact from their living environment are Spain, the Netherlands and Portugal.

Spain, the Netherlands and Portugal are also the countries where respondents were most likely to recommend their accommodation

Strategic Repositioning of Student Housing in Europe

In 2025, collaboration across The Class community reached a pivotal moment. Working alongside European institutions, cities, and universities, The Class successfully positioned Student Housing as critical infrastructure for Europe’s education mobility, talent pipeline, and long-term competitiveness.

This collective effort culminated in the publication of the 2025 Position Paper:

“Student Housing as Critical Infrastructure of the European Education Area.”

Twelve strategic relationships established with national higher education bodies, recognising student housing as essential to recruitment, retention, and competitiveness

Formal recognition by the European Commission of student housing as critical infrastructure for Europe’s future

Confirmation that the European Commission will mobilise investment, enable state-aid flexibility, and unlock private capital to expand affordable, purpose-built student housing

Explicit acknowledgement within the European Affordable Housing Plan that students are a group disproportionately affected by the housing crisis, with profound social and economic consequences

This moment marked a major shift in how student housing is understood by policymakers, investors, and universities across the continent, validating years of collective advocacy from The Class community.
