At the Country Level

The research at the country level suggests some powerful findings about accommodation types, services and facilities which have the most positive impact on students.

The findings from Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands are of particular interest as these countries report the most positive impact of living environment on well-being.

The countries where mental health was reported as the best are Germany, Austria and Italy. The countries where respondents felt the greatest impact from their living environment are Spain, the Netherlands and Portugal.

Spain, the Netherlands and Portugal are also the countries where respondents were most likely to recommend their accommodation

Country Benchmarking

The results/trends we observed with our first 2023 results from a modest 3500 responses, have not shifted significantly now when we look at nearly 6.5x (20,000) responses collected over 2023, 2024 and 2025. In 2023, we recorded an MHI5 of 57. In 2024, it rose marginally to 58. In 2025, we saw another slight increase, with MHI5 reaching 59.3. Across, the 3 years, the overall European score has slowly moved towards the 60 threshold on the MHI5 0-100 scale for ‘okay’ mental health. The average across the 3 years is 58.1.

While the overall score remains below less than the threshold of  MHI-5 scale, care must be taken to not assume that collectively all students are unhappy. With the SLM data, we can identify which cohorts of students are reporting lower happiness and living experience, and through the 4 development areas identified (Services and Facilities, Availability and Choice, Living and Community, and Targeted Support), we explore what can the sector do to help support them.

Responses have increased vastly in most countries. Growth in participation will continue to strengthen the results of the survey and bring greater certainty at the country level

Students are happiest in Portugal, Spain, Austria, and Denmark. Only in Spain, the impact on well-being of accommodation students live in is positive. Countries where students are most likley to recommend their accomodation are Finland, Portugal, Spain and Greece.

Students are the least happy in UK, Iceland ,Ireland and Belgium.
