At the Country Level

The research at the country level suggests some powerful findings about accommodation types, services and facilities which have the most positive impact on students.

The findings from Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands are of particular interest as these countries report the most positive impact of living environment on well-being.

The countries where mental health was reported as the best are Germany, Austria and Italy. The countries where respondents felt the greatest impact from their living environment are Spain, the Netherlands and Portugal.

Spain, the Netherlands and Portugal are also the countries where respondents were most likely to recommend their accommodation

Overview

The Student Living Monitor (SLM) is the only survey dedicated to understanding students’ happiness and wellbeing and the influence that the housing environment of students has on wellbeing. The report in 2024 examines patterns of student wellbeing and the relationship to their living situation and housing circumstances in Europe. The Class Foundation collaborated with key housing providers and research partners who have in total 700k+ students living in their network 10,927 students overall took part in the survey. TSH achieved 402 responses to the Student Living Monitor in 2024, which is 30% more than in 2023 and in 2024 equates to 3.7% of the total response.

The TSH demographic 2024

In 2024, the demographic of TSH respondents was broadly similar to 2023, with a main change being the proportion of international students, which is 92% in 2024 compared to 88% the previous year.

There port uses several measurements of wellbeing, mental health and satisfaction in key drivers of happiness and wellbeing in student accommodation across the main markets in Europe. By looking across several measures, the SLM is able to draw out conclusions on which elements of a students’ living experience have impacted upon them – positive impact, negative impacts, and also areas where there is little discernible impact.

MHI-5 score of overall mental health

The students living with TSH are reporting better mental health scores than the EU average, and the MHI-5 scores are also higher than the SLM in each of the countries. However, the MHI-5 scores for many of the countries are quite variable year on year, with lower scores in Spain, Italy, Austria and Germany in 2024 as compared with 2023. Note that the only countries which exceed 50 responses are Austria (63 responses) and the Netherlands (217 responses), which will account for some of the variability in scores. Caution should therefore be exercised in acting upon the results.

Net Promoter Score (NPS) and Wellbeing_NPS scores

When looking at the NPS and Wellbeing_NPS scores, TSH averages scores in both of these measures are higher for TSH than the EU.

When looking at the NPS and Wellbeing_NPS scores, TSH averages scores in both of these measures are higher for TSH than the EU.

Looking at the impact that TSH's accommodation has on wellbeing, TSH's students rate the provider at -7.0 out of 100, as compared with -17.7 (on the -100 to 100 scale) for SLM average. This higher score means that TSH's accommodation is having a significantly more positive effect upon students than the average SLM provider.

NPS and Wellbeing _NPS Scores, TSH compared to SLM averages

At the country level, the table shows that the NPS Scores for overall NPS and Wellbeing_NPS (Impact of living environment on wellbeing) are both higher in TSH than the countries.

Impact of Services and Facilities

The impact of selected services and facilities on happiness and wellbeing at TSH is shown below, using the comparator of the SLM. They are shown as a rank of highest NPS score of users of those services. Facilities that appear to make a difference at TSH are the swimming pools, cinemas and bookable shared spaces.

Facilities

It is evident from the charts that the greatest impacts being felt upon wellbeing by students are around the added value services. In these areas, such as career support, community groups led by students, security and mental health services TSH is providing a level of impact that far surpasses that which is being felt by most students in the SLM.

Services

Facilities and Services having the greatest impact on users

The chart above highlights which facilities and services are having the comparatively largest impact on respondents, with career and job support, student led community groups and swimming pool having the overall most impact. The results highlight how important successful community activities are, especially those led by students.

Rent profile in comparison with SLM 2024

The rental profile of International Campus is higher than that of the SLM overall.

Comparative Statistics

Looking at how well TSH compares to the other providers who took part in the SLM, the rankings are below. 36 providers in total took part, including 14 IIS members who contributed scores for MHI-5 and no further data, meaning that there were22 other providers whose residents provided full data. Respondents living with TSH reported the fourth highest MHI-5 scores for mental health and happiness a tan average MHI-5 score of 61.3. The NPS score at 6.5 is the ninth highest, and TSH is the fifth highest performing provider in the Wellbeing_NPS at -7.0.

The number of responses achieved at 402 was ninth largest in the SLM. Further work on improving participation in future will enable them to become a useful gauge of happiness and wellbeing.

Summary

TSH accommodates a group of students who are significantly happier than the EU SLM average. The group is also more likely to recommend TSH than the average survey respondent. There is a significant impact on happiness and wellbeing being felt by respondents, much higher than the average survey response.

All the facilities and services appear to be having a positive impact upon users, with those focused around community having the greatest impact.
