Data Insight

Italy is home to over 250 higher education institutes, with 30+ located in Rome and another 20+ in Milan. There are 1.8 million students, of which 5.6% are international. The percentage of foreign students which might seem low, but due to the growing reputation of Italian universities, this number is on the rise. Of the 65,000 PBSA beds in the country, half of the supply and those in the pipeline are in the top 5 university cities; Milan, Rome, Florence, Torino, and Bologna.

Several local investors and operators continue to develop in these key cities, and we are seeing an increase in international appetite. However, it is more difficult for international players to understand the market fundamentals due to the lack of data, research, valuation, and bias toward local players. Nevertheless, It is still an exciting space to invest especially when it comes to investing and developing sustainably.

Panel Discussion

Milan has been at the forefront of empowering new PBSA builds due to the municipality’s support. Could other regions such as Rome use Milan as a good example of best practices for these public-private collaborations?

  • How do we create more data within the market to help stakeholders make better informed decisions?
  • How are the local, well-established operators and investors responding to evolving needs of students?
  • As the sector matures, how are the services, support and amenities on offer evolving?
  • Outside Milan and Rome, where are the other key areas of interest and why?
  • How is Italy paving the way for the ESG agenda?
