Market updates have always been essential for our partners to exchange knowledge and experience, and to network. The focus for this market update will lie on student housing acquisitions, investment, and performance within Western Europe; specifically Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
There is significant investment demand for all Western European markets with the investment outlook positive for 2021. The limiting factor for transactions remains lack of supply.
The Netherlands and Belgium saw a large volume of investment deals in 2020. The United Kingdom was on trend by volume but saw a lower number of acquisitions, and Ireland saw transaction volumes fall due to travel restrictions/quarantines.
While there are ongoing operational challenges that the student accommodation industry is facing as a result of the COVID19 pandemic, these are temporary and nuanced across national and local markets. Domestic students have been more likely to return to campus than international students, however the impact on occupancy levels varies by market. Is there a difference in demand for PBSA between international and domestic students?
